Beautiful and Natural Living Table Centerpiece

This beautiful table centerpiece will bring a calming and natural feel to your living space and dining room.

This natural living table centerpiece is absolutely perfect!

I have had my dining room table centerpiece for so long now, and I change it with the seasons but I haven’t actually changed it. I did remove my table runner and added a nice wooden serving tray underneath to give it a different feel. It helped, but in reality it just became my families catch all for everything! It collected sunglasses, car keys, mail, kids toys, cards, and every other random item.

I was so tired of the catch all centerpiece, and on top of it, you couldn’t see to talk to people across the table. This meant, most of the time the centerpiece was sitting at the corner of the table instead. It was time for a change! So, I decided to make the change I had been thinking of for some time! A natural feeling, living, table centerpiece! The best part, I was able to throw this together with items that I already had on hand!

How To Make a Natural Living Table Centerpiece

This table centerpiece is super easy to make! It was also a lot of fun to put together, but I love planting plants (so that might just be me). I used a serving tray, river rock, and a table runner that I had on hand, so it worked out perfect for me. I also already had the succulents, and I needed a place for them to belong.

If you don’t want the maintenance and upkeep of a living centerpiece, you can also use faux succulents and it would look just a beautiful. It will still have the beautiful natural look, just less upkeep. I really like the live succulents because they are super easy to look after, but can help to purify the air in your home. How great is that!?!

Here are some wonderful faux succulent options if you would rather not have to water them occasionally.

Step 1. Potting Your Plants

Choose pots for your succulents that you love! I used these white pots that I had on hand because they are super easy to fill, they have a water basin so you don’t have water run out the bottom, and they look very nice for the price.

Choose succulents that you really love. Succulents can come in many different shapes, forms, colors, and more. Use ones that you already have on hand if you have them to make this a cheap and budget friendly project.

Make sure to use an indoor potting mix when planting your succulents. Indoor potting mix will drain appropriately, and it is much less likely to attract bugs inside. It’s important to use a quality indoor potting mix, like the one below.

I put down some paper towel for potting, that way I could fold it up and it clears off your working surface. No messy deal of creating mud while trying to wipe up dirt with a wet cloth.

When you are potting your plants, make sure to leave space at the top for watering. You don’t want to over fill your pot or you will be making a mess any time you try to water your plants. Succulents don’t need a lot of water, but they will surely die if you don’t water them at all, so leave room for watering!

Step 2. Prepare Your Tray

Fill your serving tray with the river rock. I filled mine about half full, I didn’t want the rock coming all the way to the top. You don’t want to place your plants first, as the rock will move them around or knock them over when you start adding it in. I used a multi color river rock, but there are also all black river rocks, and all grey river rocks that would be beautiful as well.

Step 3. Place Your Plants

Once you have filled your serving tray with the river rock, you can now place your plants. You will want to start with the middle plant. Before placing them, be sure to decide where you want each plant (if using different kids like I did). Placing your center plant first will allow you to space them evenly based on the center.

Once your center plant is placed, space the outer two plants evenly from the center, and just gently work them into the rock. You can move rocks around to fill in any gaps created while you were placing your plants.

If you want the plants to be more secure, you can use something like the double sided tape below to stick to the bottom of the pot, and then stick to the placement on the serving tray. I didn’t use the double sided tape, I felt that the rocks would hold them in place just fine, and don’t plan on moving the centerpiece much.

Step 4. Place Your Table Runner

I didn’t want my table runner running the length of the table. I actually folded mine under on the ends, to meet in the middle. This allowed for the table runner to be slightly longer than the serving tray without covering my table from end to end. My table runner was one that I had on hand, I think I got it from Target a few years ago. You could use any table runner, but I loved the neutral colors of this one.

Once your table runner is the size you prefer, place it in the center of your table.

Step 5. Place Your Centerpiece

Place your centerpiece nicely in the very center of your table runner. Make any adjustments needed to the placement, spacing, or rocks of the centerpiece to get it just where you want it.

That’s it! You are all done, and now you have yourself a beautiful natural living table centerpiece that is classic for any time of the year.
