10 Ways to Relax on Mother’s Day

Mothers day is quickly approaching, Sunday May 14th, 2023. Let’s talk about all of the mama’s out there really quick…

Mothers are: the care takers, the nurturers, the planners, the cleaning crew, the cook, the scheduling assistants, the chauffer’s, the financial planners, the event planners, the doer’s, the see’ers, the “glue holding the household together”. Being a mom is not an easy job, and it definitely doesn’t always feel rewarding. Sometimes, as mom’s, we can so caught up in all of our ‘job titles’ that we forget that we need to enjoy our family. So why not celebrate? Why not slow down and enjoy life for a moment? Why not accept the fact that WE DARN WELL DESERVE A DAY!

10 Creative Idea’s to Relax on Mother’s Day

1. Let other’s be Mom for a day…

Lounge around the house, stay in pajamas or a bath robe if you want to! Soak your feet, eat some snacks, watch TV, play some games, read a book. Do ANYTHING that you find relaxing to ease your mind. Let your kids be mom for the day…

Doesn’t that sound nice? The positive side: maybe the kids will realize just how much you do for them, or how much they rely on you.

Gift Ideas:

  • Bath robe
  • Blanket
  • Facemask
  • Foot soak
  • A good book
  • A manicure or pedicure set
  • A self care/spa set (check out these awesome Mother’s Day Gift Idea’s)

2. Order takeout

If there are restaurants that are open around you, order takeout and stay in. Not many of us moms want to get ready and go out with the kids to a restaurant and deal with their behavior, tantrums, yelling, hyper, can’t act right in public attitudes that always tend to happen when you just want to relax (can you tell I have young kids?). Order some takeout, have someone else pick it up, and stay in so you don’t have to cook or deal with the stress of going out!

Gift Ideas:

  • Gift card to a great restaurant
  • Wine/Beverage of choice
  • A snack basket with her favorite treats

3. Schedule a Spa Day

Let everyone fend for themselves while Mom (and maybe some of her well deserving mom friends?) go out and enjoy a wonderful spa day to themselves. Get a facial or a mask, get a massage, a pedicure or manicure, whatever sounds good to you! Allow yourself to relax, maybe even grab some lunch or dinner while you are out. Nothing feels better than to feel relaxed and refreshed, and it allows you to be the best version of yourself when you feel cared for.

Gift Ideas:

  • Gift certificate to her favorite spa
  • Gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure
  • Schedule a spa day with a local or her favorite spa
  • Gift card for a nice lunch

4. Have a Movie Day

Plan a movie day with your family or your friends, whichever you choose. Have a day where you can select a line up of your favorite movies or shows, get some snacks, and lay back and relax. Don’t worry about if there are dishes in the sink, floors that need cleaned, or the mess that little brother just made in the bathroom. Spend a day where you don’t feel obligated to be taking care of everyone else, and just clear your mind.

Gift Ideas:

  • Snack basket with her favorite treats
  • A new movie or series that she’s been waiting to see
  • A blanket

5. Take a Bubble Bath

Nothing beats spending a nice long time soaking in a nice hot bathtub with some candles, bubble bath, some wine/beverage of choice and not having a care in the world! Have your significant other keep the kids occupied, and take some time to just relax by yourself in a nice warm slice of heaven! Take it up a notch if you would like, and maybe you and your significant other could rent a hotel room that has a jacuzzi tub that you could both relax in!

Gift Ideas:

  • Nice bubble bath
  • Bath salts or bath bombs
  • A robe
  • Candles (try for calming scents like lavender, honeysuckle, eucalyptus or sea salt)
  • Wine or beverage of choice
  • Face mask
  • Bath essential oils

6. Shopping Spree for Mom

Allow yourself a day to have a shopping spree! You can do this at home, or you can go out by yourself or with friends. You can set a limit if needed and be sure not to exceed your limit, but the whole point is to allow yourself a day for your wants and needs to be above everyone else’s. Shopping sprees from home can be super fun and relaxing in the right environment, but if you need to get out of the house, then go out to your favorite stores (although a lot may be closed on Mother’s Day). Get those shoes that have been in your cart for months, get that nice kitchen device that you wanted, buy those earrings, get that makeup you wanted to try out! DO NOT BUY THINGS FOR THE KIDS, this is supposed to be about you.

Gift Ideas:

  • Gift card to her favorite stores
  • Gift card to Amazon (admit it, they have almost everything)

7. Play Some Yard Games

Let your husband take over on the grill and you and the family can set up some yard games to play for a great day! For some, this may not sound relaxing, but all of us have different ideas of what relaxes us. I personally love yard games, and playing games keeps my kids occupied and entertained to allow a day mostly free of boredom complaining and fighting with each other. My personal favorite yard games are: ladder ball, cornhole, and bocce ball. We recently just got a set of giant Jenga and giant connect 4 that are also great options for a yard game day. Maybe you can have a couple tropical drinks and have a small fire to get the summer vibes rolling!

Gift Ideas:

  • Yard games
  • Fire ring/nice fire pit (we love our propane patio fireplace)
  • “Umbrella” drink ingredients
  • Portable yard cupholders/drink holders
  • Patio furniture/outdoor chairs

8. Have a “Honey Do” Day

Have a day where your husband or significant other dedicates time to working on some of those “Honey Do” projects that have been building up. To make it a really great day, set a goal of completing “x” amount of projects that day. You don’t have to be stressed or involved, I mean it is Mother’s Day after all (although I find projects relaxing and they make me happy). Watch your stress melt away as more and more projects or tasks make progress and get completed.

Gift Ideas:

  • Project completion coupons
  • Your time and commitment

9. Breakfast and Mimosa’s in Bed

Have your husband/significant other and/or kid’s make you a nice breakfast in bed! Personally, I couldn’t ask for a better start to a relaxing day for me with a nice Mimosa with my favorite champagne, but if you don’t drink, breakfast in bed alone is a great way to start your day. I know a lot of times we want things like this to be a thought that our significant has all by themselves, but let’s be real ladies, don’t be afraid to ask for what you want! Most of the time our SO is more than willing to do what we would like, they just don’t know what that is.

Gift Ideas:

  • A bottle of her favorite champagne
  • A nice food tray
  • A robe and slippers
  • A nice cup, non-spill

10. A Day of Your Favorite Hobby

Spend a day doing your favorite hobby or hobbies. This is different for everyone, so think of what you love doing most and find a way to take a day to do this in peace. For some people this might be crafting, gardening, baking, exercising, going to the beach, hiking, reading, or playing games. These are just some thoughts or ideas, and for us Mama’s this one might take some soul searching to remember what we truly enjoy spending our time doing.

Gift Ideas:

  • Cricut and/or cricut supplies
  • Scrapbooking kits
  • Baking supplies or a recipe book
  • New plants or lawn/garden décor
  • Beach day kit, beach bag, beach blanket, beach umbrella
  • Beach chairs
  • Hiking boots or a trail map
  • New board or card games
  • New items for her favorite hobbies

  1. Great ideas ! My day typically starts with breakfast in bed, staying in bed until I just can’t ? then get dressed for a hike in the woods with a lunch packed looking for mushrooms listening to the birds and kids laughing then when we get back I feel so refreshed from being out and not on a schedule concluded by a nice ride on my horses ? fingers crossed for good weather
If weather doesn’t cooperate we spend the day in pj’s cuddling and watching movies and playing cards together, no rushing around just spending the day with each other

    1. That is great! Sometimes not rushing and not having a schedule is the best relaxation of all!
