This small entryway organization idea is stellar if you have kids! If your house is anything like mine, the entryway tends to accumulate a lot of… JUNK. I mean this in the nicest way, but there are always toys the kids brought in, backpacks on the floor, coats and jackets laying around, shoes scattered all over, random papers from school or snack bags that came inside and got left. Don’t even let me get started on the winter months, and the gear that comes along with it. This quick kids station for your entryway is the solution for organizing your entryway with young kids at home!
The entryway is my nemesis, but it usually starts from all the kids’ items and continues to grow from there. This is a small entryway organization idea that has made my space so much more enjoyable.
This kids station is the perfect solution to all the scattered backpacks, jackets, snow pants, gloves, hats, shoes and more! The best part, this is an apartment friendly entryway organization idea as well! There are no nails, screws or drills needed.

Creating Your Kids Station For Your Entryway
Creating or installing this kids station for your entryway is super easy. The hardest part about getting this all set up is making sure that everything is level and even. Once you have the marks, it’s all smooth sailing from there!
Step 1
The first step in setting up this kids station for your entryway is determining where you will place it. Every house is set up differently, and each entryway will have it’s own available space. When determining where you will place your kids station, you will want to make sure that it will comfortably fit the needed amount of hooks with space between for holding coats, snow pants, backpacks, or whatever you plan to use it for.
I have a space right next to my door, between my entry door and window, that perfectly fit 4 hooks, 2 for each kid. This space was perfect because it’s right over the heater vent in our entryway, so it works great for drying out wet winter gear.
Step 2
Next, you will need to determine how high to hang your hooks and baskets. You will want your kids to be able to reach the baskets and hooks. There isn’t much of a point to a specific kids station in your entryway if your kids can’t reach the hooks and baskets to use it.
In order to determine how high to have your hooks, you can either have your kids there to figure out how high they should be, or you can use their longer outdoor gear such as snow pants, to figure out how high the hooks should be to keep them off the ground. You will need to leave enough room below the outdoor gear for your shoe basket as well.
I used my son’s snow pants to determine how high to hang the hooks. Once I determined the height needed, I used a pencil to mark where the hook should sit.
Step 3
Next, you will need to place a hook at the level you marked when measuring in step 2. Placing your hook at the proper height, take your pencil and mark the top of the hook. When using hooks like the 3M hooks I linked above, the best method is to level them by the top or bottom. If you try to mark where the hooks are, you will likely end up with them being uneven.
Once you have marked the top portion of the hook, take your string and wall safe tape, and tape the string at the same level that your mark was placed. String your sting across the area you will be hanging the hooks, and use your level to assure the string is straight.
Step 4
Now that you have a level area marked across the wall, you will need to determine how far apart you want your hooks. I placed the 2 hooks for each kid closer together, while leaving space in between to separate one set from the other. I measured the distance between to assure they were even, and then made the marks at the appropriate spots. Once you have all marks made, it’s time to place your hooks! Make sure to adhere your hooks following your manufacturers instructions for proper placement.
Step 5
After you have all your hooks placed, now you can move on to the baskets. I would have preferred to have the baskets directly above the hooks, but unfortunately the area I had available had a light switch at the same level that my baskets needed to be. I moved them into the center slightly, which turned out fine once complete.
To hang the baskets, you will follow the same instructions as step 3. Place your baskets at the height that you need them. Determine where the hooks for the baskets will be placed, and mark the tops of the hooks. Follow step 3 to level and hang your baskets.
Step 6
After placing your baskets, you will want to center your chalkboard labels above the baskets. These are completely optional, but they are super cute and fun for the kids! You can use whatever shape or placement of the labels as you’d like, but I chose to center them above the baskets. It made it look clean and finished, to me.
Use your chalk markers to draw the names of your kids, or whatever design your kids would enjoy!
Step 7
Step 7 is the last step in creating this kids station for your entryway. This step is super simple, you are just going to place your shoe basket beneath all the items you have set up. Due to my entryway layout, I had to use a small thin basket for shoes. If I had the choice, I would have used a larger basket to hold shoes, but this wire basket allows the air vent to breathe if it gets slid over top of it. Which, let’s face it, it will slide. Between the dog and the kids, my entryway is always askew.
I did not do anything to hold this basket in place, as I would like to be able to empty or clean it regularly.
