This recipe is definitely out of my “normal” recipe type. I don’t usually use instant foods, but that is the only way to recreate the infamous KFC bowl, and it’s SO GOOD! If you haven’t had a KFC bowl before, you’re missing out. A KFC bowl contains mashed potatoes, corn, breaded chicken bites, and cheese all topped with gravy. About This Copycat KFC Bowl Recipe

I highly suggest using the ingredients and brands listed in my ingredients above. I have tried this multiple different ways, but other brands and styles of these ingredients don’t create the same flavors.

The popcorn chicken has to be fried for this to taste right. You need to use a high heat oil such as vegetable oil, corn oil or canola oil. I haven’t tried this recipe using an air fryer, but I’m sure it would come close.

I served these in our lunch prep containers. It worked out great as they are about the same size and style as what the original KFC bowls come in as well, so it was super easy to portion out. You can find the containers we use for lunches and leftovers here.

Copycat KFC Bowl Recipe

This copycat KFC bowl recipe is a super quick and easy dinner that is sure to please!
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Course dinner, Main Course
Cuisine American
Servings 6 people

Equipment

  • 1 Frying Pan
  • 2 pots
  • Bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 package Tyson Any'tizers Popcorn Chicken
  • 1 package Idahoan Family Size Buttery Homestyle Mashed Potatoes
  • 1 can Sweet Whole Kernel Corn drained
  • 1 jar Heinz Homestyle Chicken Gravy
  • 1 cup Sharp Shredded Cheddar
  • 3 cups Vegetable Oil measurement is approximate

Instructions

  • Place your vegetable oil in a frying pan. The measurement is approximate and will depend on the size of your pan, but you will want the oil to come up at least 1/2". Turn the oil on medium/high heat and allow it to heat through.
  • Place as many popcorn chicken bites in the heated oil as will fit in a single layer. Allow these to cook for about 3-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through and golden brown on the outside. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate and continue this process until all chicken has been cooked.
  • While the chicken is cooking, prepare the gravy and mashed potatoes according to the package instructions.
  • Drain the whole kernel corn, and place this in a microwave safe bowl. Add 1 Tbsp of butter (optional) and heat in the microwave until fully heated. This usually takes about 1 minute 30 seconds in my microwave.
  • Once the chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn are all cooked or heated, start assembling your bowls.
  • Place a layer of mashed potatoes in the bottom of the bowl. Place a thin layer of corn on top of the mashed potatoes. Top the potatoes and corn with your desired amount of chicken pieces. Pour about 1/4 cup of gravy overtop of the chicken, corn and potatoes. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

Note: when using the meal prep containers I noted in my post, you can place the lid on the bowl after adding the cheese, and the contained heat will melt the cheese.
