Super Easy Marinated Onions | Take Your Sandwich to the Next Level

Take your food to the next level with these easy marinated onions, or quick pickled onions.

These super simple marinated onions (or quick pickled onions) are a wonderful addition to many different dishes. They are super easy to make, and delicious to add to practically any dish you would put onion in (unless your my husband, then you just eat them out of the bowl…).

These marinated onions are tangy and sweet. They are great on sandwiches, burgers, wraps, salads, tacos, burritos or burrito bowls, and many other dishes. These onions are kind of like Franks Red Hot, because you can put that s***t on anything!

One of my favorite recipes to use these onions, click the link for the recipe: Amazing Grilled Greek Chicken Pitas (So Good and Refreshing).

I am going to admit something, I am terrible at taking pictures when I am making food! Sorry I don’t have step by step pictures here, but it’s fine because there are only three ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Red Onion
  • Fresh Lime Juice
  • Sugar

marinated onions that are great on everything

Step 1:

First, start with the red onion. Cut the red onion in half, if you have a larger red onion you only need half of the onion. If you have a medium to small red onion, you will use the whole onion. Once you have determined if you are using half or all of the onion, start cutting very thin slices out of the onion. These slices should be in the shape of half circles.

Put your thin onion slices into a small bowl.

Step 2:

Take your lime and quarter it. Squeeze the fresh lime juice, from the whole lime, overtop of the onions. It’s fine if some of the lime comes out into the bowl, it just adds a little more zest to your onions!

Discard the lime quarters, you won’t need them any for anything else.

Step 3:

Take between 1/2 Tbsp and 1 Tbsp of granulated sugar and pour it overtop of the onions and lime juice. The amount of sugar you use really depends on how sweet you want your onions. We probably use about 3/4 of a tablespoon, but not all measuring spoons have that size.

Once you have added your sugar, mix everything together very well. Let this sit for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure all the onions get saturated in the lime juice and sugar mixture. Personally, I like to let these sit for about an hour, I feel like they hit their prime after an hour.

That’s it! I told you these were super simple.

You can save these in an air tight storage container in the fridge for up to 3 weeks, but they start to loose their freshness after a few days.

Pin the recipe below to save it for later, you will definitely want to keep this one handy!

    1. Absolutely! Thank you for checking it out. I don’t appreciate the intensity of raw onion overpowering a dish, but these are wonderful. They are sweet and tangy, and the raw onion flavor is hardly there (especially the longer they marinate).
