Delightful Acorn Donut Holes | A Simple Fall Treat Idea

Make a fun fall treat for your family with these simple and cute acorn donut holes!

Fall is here! As if there aren’t enough fall treats and snacks floating out there, I thought I might add one more to the list. These delightful acorn donut holes are a fun treat for your kids and family, and they are simple to make. I am not making my own donuts here… I am all about making things simple.

I had some left over plain donut holes that were likely going to sit until they went bad. Everyone likes the flavored or frosted ones, so the plain ones tend to just sit around. Instead of letting them go to waste, I decided to make them into a fun treat the kids couldn’t resist!

Ingredients

You can definitely mix these ingredients up with other things, but what I used is below.

Try it without peanuts, try peanut butter chips instead of butterscotch, or just use chocolate. Mix up the ingredients to make it what you like!

About the Acorn Donut Holes

Donut Holes

I really suggest using plain donut holes for this recipe. You can use glazed or flavored ones, but it would become so sweet in my opinion. It really entirely depends on how sweet you want these to be.

Baking Chips

I say baking chips because you can really use whatever flavors you would like to. I used semi-sweet chocolate chips and butterscotch chips mixed together. You can do this with peanut butter chips, or just chocolate chips. You can also you milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate… whatever you prefer.

When you melt your baking chips you can either do it in a double boiler, or in the microwave with a microwave safe bowl. I don’t own a double boiler, so I melted mine in the microwave. The key is to heat them in very small increments, such as 15 seconds, stirring between each interval. You want the chips to be just melted, even with some chunks left (just mix them in until they melt). If you overheat the chips in the microwave they will start to burn and chunk together, it will never become smooth after that.

Toppings

The toppings for these can really be whatever you would like them to be. I had nut topping for ice cream and white sprinkles on hand, so I decided to use those. You can use cute colored fall sprinkles, nut topping, candy topping, or any type of topping/coating for deserts. Use this for decoration, or for flavor!

The easiest method for topping these after dipping them in the melted chips is to have small bowls with your toppings ready. This makes it quick to just dip them in and not worry about sprinkling or getting good ingredients messy or mixed together.

Pretzel Sticks

Make sure to use the thin pretzel sticks. These will be the stem on your “acorn”. I found that these are the perfect size if you break them into thirds and use the two end pieces. You can also break them in half, they are just a little long in my opinion.

How To Clean Melted Chocolate

The easiest way I have found to clean melted chocolate chips from a bowl is to do it before it dries. I have heard of methods where you freeze it and it breaks out. I’ve tried this without much success.

My suggestion is to take paper towel and wipe out the remaining chocolate as best as you can. There should only be a very thin layer of melted chocolate remaining in your bowl after wiping.

Once your bowl is mostly wiped out, place this bowl under hot tap water and allow it to fill at least half way. Use a dish rag or paper towel to wipe the edges again with the water inside. This will dilute the rest of the chocolate and remove it from the bowl sides. After that, your bowl should be cleaned out entirely!

Cuisine American

Equipment

  • Bowls
  • Parchment Paper
  • sheet pan

Ingredients

  • 1 container Donut Holes plain
  • 1/2 cup Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 cup Butterscotch Chips
  • Nut Topping as desired
  • Sprinkles as desired
  • Pretzel Sticks handful

Instructions

  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Prepare your nut topping and sprinkles by placing them into separate small bowls close to the baking sheet.
  • Break apart your pretzel sticks into halves or thirds. These will be used for the stems of the acorn.
  • Place your chocolate chips and butterscotch chips into a microwave safe bowl. Heat in your microwave for 15 second increments, stirring in between. Repeat this until the chips are just melted, with some small non melted chunks still left. Mix together until the remaining chunks melt and mix in.
  • Take your donut holes and begin dipping one portion of the donut hole into the melted chips to just cover one portion of the donut. If needed, slightly twist the donut hole back and forth to create a smooth line of melted chocolate. Carefully pull the donut hole out of the chocolate twisting any chocolate drips back down to the donut hole.
  • Gently dip your donut hole into the prepared topping bowls to coat them as much as you'd like. Make sure not to completely coat the chocolate with your first topping, it won't leave room for additional toppings to stick.
  • Take a piece of the pretzel stick and stick it through the middle of the coating and down into the donut hole until it sticks out about a 1/4".
  • Place the donut hole onto the baking sheet and repeat until your container of donut holes is gone, or until you have an amount of these treats that you are satisfied with.
  • Place the baking sheet into the refrigerator to allow the chocolate to harden again. This will take at least 30 minutes.

    1. Thank you so much! I thought it was a wonderful idea to use up items before they go to waste too. I love to try creative alternatives to throwing things out. This weekend I made omelets with our leftover philly cheese steak dinner, they were amazing and it was one less item going to waste. 🙂
