About This Philly Cheesesteak Recipe

Shaved Steak / Sirloin Steak

What makes this recipe so quick and easy is taking the pre-work out of it by purchasing shaved steak. I get the pictured package above from Aldi. It’s very good, and it makes this meal super quick. If you choose to shave your own steak, it will likely take quite a bit longer (especially if you take the time to make it super thin). If you shave your own steak, I would recommend using ribeye, but for a more cost effective solution, you can also use tender sirloin. I have done this many times, and it still turns out great!

Green Pepper & Onion

You will want the green pepper and onion sliced really thin. The thin sliced ingredients is one of the keys for this Philly cheesesteak recipe. We use Vidalia onion, it’s our preferred, but you could also substitute for white or yellow onion.

Hoagie Rolls

The rolls or buns used for these sandwiches are going to be a key component of a good Philly cheesesteak as well. If possible, I highly suggest using a freshly made deli style hoagie roll. It’s also a very, very good idea to toast your hoagie rolls with some butter and garlic powder.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Course dinner, Main Course
Cuisine American
Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • 1 griddle optional but recommended

Ingredients

  • 14 oz Shaved Steak
  • 1 Green Pepper
  • 1 Onion Vidalia preferred
  • 3 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp Fresh Ground Salt more or less to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Fresh Cracked Pepper more or less to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder plus some extra for toasting the buns
  • 8 slices Provolone Cheese
  • 4 Hoagie Rolls
  • Olive Oil for cooking
  • Mayonnaise for topping

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, mix the shaved steak, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and half the salt and pepper. Stir until well combined and allow to sit for at least 10 minutes.
  • While the steak is marinating, thinly slice the green pepper and onion.
  • Open the sliced hoagie rolls and butter each side of the inside. Lightly sprinkle with garlic powder.
  • Heat your griddle to 400°F (or higher if your griddle allows). Place the rolls butter side down on the heated griddle surface and cook until lightly browned.
  • Drizzle olive oil onto the griddle surface to allow it to heat up.
  • Once your oil is up to temperature, add the green pepper and onion. Sprinkle lightly, to taste, with the remaining salt and pepper. Sauté these until they are lightly browned and the onion is translucent.
  • Place the onion and green pepper to one side of the griddle, and add a drizzle of olive oil to the free side. Place the marinated shaved steak on the free side in the heated olive oil. Cook this until the liquid has evaporated, and the shaved steak is starting to brown.
  • Turn the griddle off. You can leave the items on the surface, or remove them to a plate. Put your desired amount of mayonnaise on your hoagie roll, half the provolone slices and place one whole slice on the bottom, and one on the top of each roll. Add the shaved steak, peppers, and onions as desired on each sandwich.
  • Enjoy!
