Free School Supplies For Those In Need

There are many different places that offer free school supplies for families that need assistance. Many school districts, churches, rescue missions and food banks may provide programs for free school supplies to families in need. Some programs have application processes that, a lot of times, begin in July. Search for these types of places in your local area and reach out to see if they have any school supply assistance programs.

Additionally, the places listed below are popular places that typically run school supply donation events.

  • Salvation Army
  • United Way (donates to local entities, you can find out where participates from your local United Way)
  • The Assistance League
  • Love INC
  • Catholic Charities
  • Boys & Girls Club
  • Wireless Zone (Backpack Giveaway: click here for more information, July 30th @ 1pm for 2023)

Make sure to contact your local locations to verify that they are participating in a back to school drive before going there. Not all locations participate, and you wouldn’t want to drive all the way there to find out there isn’t anything available.

If you bought bulk school supplies and have extra, or if you are looking to contribute to your community, there are many different ways to donate school supplies. You can donate school supplies to your school district, churches, rescue missions, and local school supply drives. Many school supply drives also have online stores created where you can purchase online and directly donate these items.

Most donation places accept new items, but not necessarily used items. If you have used school supplies like backpacks, clothes, and gear that are still in good condition, churches and missions may work with local families that will be able to use these items.

The Salvation Army takes school supply donations, but you will need to contact your local location to determine the process for donating.

The United Way runs school supply drives all over the nation that typically start in July. Each local chapter has different school supply drives, so you will need to search for your local chapter. For example, in my area in Western Michigan, the United Way runs a “stuff the bus” program through United Way of the Lakeshore.

Take a look at the list of commonly accepted donation items below.

If you have the ability to donate to your child’s classroom, this is super helpful for the schools! Classrooms and school districts always welcome appropriate classroom donation items. Some very commonly needed items are antibacterial wipes, paper towels, hand soap or sanitizer, and tissues.

Many school districts differ in the items needed, and some may need donations on classroom supplies as well. If you are in doubt, you can always talk to your child’s school to determine what items are most needed for the classrooms.

If you are thinking of donating classroom snacks for younger kids, be sure to check with the teacher or school for accepted snack types due to allergies.

  3. Ha! Thinking about purchasing school supplies sends me down Memory Lane. I do, however contribute to a school supply collection drive through my church — to help out families with financial needs. And, I send gift cards to my grandchildren — usually to Target or Walmart — for school supplies. Thank you for sharing this post in the Talent-Sharing Tuesdays Link-Up 69.
